This 3.0 mile long trail is rated “easiest” by the National Forest. It gains only 300 feet in elevation over its length from 900 feet to 1200 feet above sea level. The first 1.5 miles follows an old railroad grade along beaver ponds. At 1.5 miles there is a bridge between the ponds where you can view wildlife if you approach the ponds quietly. From here the trail enters old growth forest. You will want to note the groves of ancient
cedar that are hundreds of years old.
The trail leaves the river and passes the site of the former Sauk
Ranger Station that was built in 1916.
Equipment and supplies had to be brought in by packhorse until the
railroad arriver in 1926. The trail
climbs a couple of hundred feet to end on a road near A |
